![]() A visit to his old friend Friar Tuck (Tim Minchin) reveals that Robin had long ago been listed as a “fallen soldier” and that the Sheriff of Nottingham (Mendelsohn) is responsible for his home’s destruction and Marian’s disappearance. The story has Robin standing up for the proper treatment of an enemy on the battlefield, being sent home in disgrace for it, and finding that his home in England has been destroyed and Marian, the love of his life, has vanished. With few exceptions, most of the cast is caught either overemphasizing their dialogue and facial expressions or can be seen standing around seemingly waiting for one of the other actors to deliver a line for them to react to. Neither does the director seem sure of what to do with his actors. Be warned: There isn’t an action segment in the film that isn’t marred by some slo-mo. But he almost immediately shows no understanding of the fact that slow motion shots are not only passé, they also tend to ruin action sequences. ![]() The director appears to have the right ideas of where to place his cameras and when to add an edit for the most excitement. ![]() The battle scenes in the early parts of the film, set in Arabia, are quite good, with Robin’s bow-and-arrow outfit being ambushed by Arab fighters, one of whom has the equivalent of an arrow-firing Gatling gun. ![]()
